Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
Volunteers will be part of a group of 4-6 volunteers within Merthyr Tydfil and will gain training opportunities available through the Youth Service and the County Borough Council.
Volunteers will have the following learning opportunities:
- Understanding youth work in Wales
- Developing and delivering youth work
- Understanding and organising youth information
- Engaging young people in the youth service and its activities
- How best to work with disadvantaged young people or young people in risk of offending

EVS volunteers will be integral to working with young people in Merthyr Tydfil:
- Offering support to children of migrant workers in schools
- Inspiring young people aged 16-25 years old to take part in volunteering
- Engaging young people aged 11 -25 years old in youth provisions in Merthyr Tydfil
- Engage young people aged 11 -25 years old in learning about other cultures and countries
- Developing new workshops and activities for young people aged 11 -25 years old
There are 5 possible activities for the EVS Volunteer:
- Merthyr Tydfil Info Shop & Pen Y Dre Youth Centre - At Pen Y Dre Youth Club the EVS volunteer will work alongside youth workers to organise activities and workshops for young people at the youth centre. The volunteer will also interact with the young people to help them to open up and maybe inspire them to take part in volunteering overseas or in Wales. At the Information Shop the volunteer will be invovled in working with young people in Merthyr at a centre where they can drop in and use the internet and access information. The volunteer will ensure that information for young people is up to date and in order. The volunteer will also have the opportunity to be involved in the development of workshops, writing newsletters and some outdoor activities. The volunteer will work within these two centres.
- Merthyr Tydfil Youth Inclusion Project - here the volunteer will be involved with a project that works specifically with young people in risk of offending. It organises workshops and projects for the young people to increase their skills, confidence and knowledge so that they stay in school, continue with education or go into training or employment. The volunteer will support the project and help with activities and develop some new workshops and activities. This project will involve some outdoor activities and practical tasks.
- Support for young immigrants in Merthyr Tydfil (Polish and Portuguese) - here 2 volunteers will support young Polish and Portuguese people who have recently moved to Merthyr Tydfil. Volunteers will support these young people in schools in their classes and also will help to integrate them into the youth provision in Merthyr Tydfil. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to get invovled with a cultural organisation which aims to integrate migrant workers into the community through the producting of a regular newsletter.
